Why the UK’s Parental Leave System Needs an Overhaul!
Big news in parenting policy: MPs have launched a full review of the UK’s outdated parental leave system. And honestly? It’s long overdue.
For families throughout the UK, the current setup just doesn’t reflect the way we live, love or raise our children.
What’s the issue?
Right now, the UK offers:
– Just two weeks paternity leave for most secondary caregivers, paid at around £187 per week
– A complex, underused Shared Parental Leave system that few families access
– Minimal support for self-employed or non-traditional families, who are often left out of the equation altogether
You can read more about the review and what’s being proposed, or see how campaigners are pushing back with action like the recent “Dad Strike”.
Why this matters
This isn’t just about a few more days off. It’s about:
– Supporting all parents to bond with their baby, regardless of gender or family setup
– Tackling the gender pay gap by making time off more equal
– Recognising LGBTQ+ families, single parents, carers and everyone outside the default mould
For families like mine, with two mums, figuring out who qualifies for which leave, and how, can be confusing and difficult to navigate. And that’s before you even consider the financial hit. Read about our Reciprocal IVF journey here.
What needs to change
Campaigners are calling for:
– At least six weeks of properly paid leave for secondary carers
– Simplified shared leave options
– Inclusion for self-employed parents and non-birth parents
– Day-one entitlement to leave; no hoops to jump through
These changes would mean real support from day one for ALL families.
Let’s talk about it
If you’ve felt the gaps in the system, or been left out entirely, now’s the time to speak up. Share your story. Tag your MP online. Post about what leave looked like (or didn’t) for you and your family.
Because no parent should be made to feel like an afterthought.
