What is Reciprocal IVF?
Reciprocal IVF, also known as shared motherhood or partner-assisted reproduction, is a fertility treatment that allows both partners in a same-sex female couple to be physically involved in the conception and pregnancy journey. One partner provides the egg, and the other carries the pregnancy. For many LGBT families, including two-mum families like ours, it’s a beautiful option to consider.
Why We Chose Reciprocal IVF
As two mums hoping to start a family, we wanted to feel connected to the journey in a way that felt right for us. Reciprocal IVF allowed us to do that. One of us (Tash) provided the eggs, and the other (Melissa) carried our baby. It was a way for us to share the process, both physically and emotionally, in a way that felt balanced and meaningful.
That said, every family’s journey to parenthood is different and valid. Whether you’re using IVF, IUI, surrogacy, adoption, or any other path – your role as a parent isn’t defined by biology or pregnancy. For us, Reciprocal IVF felt like the best fit, but it’s one of many wonderful ways to grow a family.
A Shared Experience
While some fertility treatments can feel more clinical, we found Reciprocal IVF offered a chance to collaborate and support each other through each step. It felt empowering to combine our efforts and grow together as a team.
We also appreciated how involved we could be in the entire process – from choosing a clinic and donor to embryo transfer and beyond. It was more than just a procedure for us; it was an experience that helped shape the beginning of our family.
Final Thoughts
Reciprocal IVF might not be for everyone, and that’s okay. There are many paths to parenthood, and all are equally important. For us, this was the one that made sense. It gave us the opportunity to share in the experience in a way that felt personal and connected.
If you’re considering fertility treatment as a same-sex couple, it might be worth exploring Reciprocal IVF. Whether it’s the right fit for you or not, your journey is your own – and it’s already beautiful just by beginning it.
We chose to go abroad for our treatment, and we’ve shared some more information here on why!
